Why STALKER 2 Devs Say PS4 Can’t Run Their Game
GSC Game World, the developer behind the STALKER series, recently confirmed that Stalker 2 will not be available on PS4 or Xbox One, citing hardware limitations as the primary reason. According to GSC Game World, Stalker 2 is a “next-gen game” designed to take full advantage of advanced features found on the Xbox Series X/S and high-end PCs, which wouldn’t be possible on older consoles. This means Stalker 2 won’t be coming to PlayStation 4 or Xbox One, disappointing fans who were hoping for a cross-generation release.
The wait for Stalker 2 has been a long one; with the last installment, Call of Pripyat, released back in 2010 outside the CIS region, fans have eagerly awaited this sequel. Originally planned for 2012, Stalker 2 was ultimately canceled, only to be revived in 2018 with a new release window and the announcement of a console version. This marks the first time a STALKER game will come to consoles, though it’s exclusively for Xbox Series X/S and not available for PlayStation 4.
While the decision to avoid older consoles may be disappointing for last-gen console owners, it does allow GSC Game World to focus on optimizing Stalker 2 for next-gen hardware. The game will support 4K resolution on Xbox Series X, HDR on Series X/S, and ray-tracing on capable PCs. GSC Game World also promises 120 FPS on the Xbox Series X, underscoring the studio’s commitment to a smooth, visually immersive experience.
This approach reflects a growing trend in the industry, as more developers prioritize next-gen performance, potentially learning from issues faced by cross-gen titles like Cyberpunk 2077. As Stalker 2 approaches its anticipated release, fans can look forward to a technically refined experience, albeit exclusively on next-gen consoles and PC.
